A 26-year-old rural Kell woman was burned in a fire Monday that caused heavy fire damage to her kitchen and smoke damage throughout her home.
The fire apparently started in a pan of grease on the stove. Brittany Bryan was burned when trying to put out the fire. She was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia and was later released.
Flames were showing out the back door of the home when the first fire fighters arrived on the scene.
Kell called Salem, Iuka, Centralia Fire Protection District and Mt. Vernon City firemen to the scene, with Odin and Centralia City Firemen covering the Kell Fire station in the event of another fire.
Kell Fire Chief Mick McDaneld says having the mutual aid allowed crews to rotate in and out of the firefighting to get a break for the hot and humid weather.
The Red Cross was called to assist the family. The homeowner is identified as Darlene Pryor.
The fire call came in at noon. Firemen were on the scene for about two hours.
