The Salem Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry received a truck load with 970 boxes of Bananas. The Salem Food Pantry is located at The Grace United Methodist Church. The Director of the food pantry, Carol Ann Short, is the one who got the call for the banana truck.

“Yeah so we got a phone call yesterday. They said we have a truck of bananas and we’re trying to find somewhere to donate them. So we were like great, not realizing how big of a truck we were going to get. So several hours later we had a semi.  It took about three to three and a half hours to unload. We had quite a team of volunteers, and some of the sheriff’s department guys came over and helped.”

With there being 970 boxes of bananas, roughly 15 clusters per box, and roughly 7 bananas per cluster. The Salem Food Pantry received roughly 14,500 clusters, and over 100,000 individual bananas. With there being such a large number of bananas, the food pantry is giving the bananas out to anyone interested in taking them.

“So we’ve been putting the word out on Facebook, and calling different churches, daycares, and anyone we can think of that might help us get the word out. So we’re helping a lot of other pantries in the area. Churches, nursing homes, daycares, organizations, anybody would like to take several boxes you can take as many as you want. They are green right now, so they will be ripe for a while. But we still need to get rid of these this week.”

If you or an organization you are a part of can use a substantial amount of bananas, please contact the church at (618) 813-3316.
