Dorothy Bernice Tate, 90, of Texico, passed away at 9:35 a.m. Saturday, June 13, 2026, in Mt. Vernon.
She was born August 28, 1935, in Bernie, Missouri, the daughter of Emerald Edward and Mae Kathleen (Whitehead) Elliott. On August 21, 1953, she married Charles D. Tate, and he preceded her in death on December 14, 2004.
Mrs. Tate attended Ebenezer School and Mt. Vernon Township High School, and later attained her GED. She was a member at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for 81 years, and served in the Bus Ministry with her husband for many years. After working at Austin’s for several years, and then Canteen at Continental in Mt. Vernon, she later became the custodian at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. In addition, she sold produce at the farmer’s market in Mt. Vernon for many years, with her husband. She enjoyed working in the garden, mowing, canning, picking blackberries, playing with her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, and she especially loved reading.
She is survived by her daughters, Lois Faye Tennison of DuQuoin, and Betty Jean Williams and husband Alan of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Melissa Scott of Arlington, Tennessee, Charles McGhee and wife Jennifer of Dix, Brendan McGhee and wife Candace of Mt. Vernon, Micheal Randall Jr. and wife Melissa of Dix, Susan Bundy and husband Jeff of Dix, John Randall of Mt. Vernon, Ronald Randall of Fairfield, Curtis Randall and wife Stephanie of Tennessee, Christopher Albright and significant other Kathy Bozovich of Mt. Vernon, Christina Sims and husband Donnie of DuQuoin, Erik Williams and wife Virgenia Jolene of Mt. Vernon, and Brittany Seagraves and husband Andrew of Mt. Vernon; great-grandchildren, Trinity Scott, Zane Scott and wife Baylee, Phoenix Scott, Daphne McGhee, Henry McGhee, Lyla McGhee, Stella McGhee, Victoria Greenwood and spouse Sarah, Melody Randall, Avery Randall, LeAnna Cagle and husband Zac, Morgan Andis and husband Christian, Tate Bundy, Lola Randall, Mikayla Randall, Jolie Randall, Cassandra Barnard and significant other Marcus Johnson, Baylor Barnard, Christian Sims, Benjamin Sims, Mercy Sims, Maximus Williams, Tyrael Williams, Andraya Seagraves, Auralya Seagraves, and the expected baby of Brittany and Andrew Seagraves; great-great-grandchildren, Zayden Cagle and the expected baby of Morgan and Christian Andis; and son-in-law, James McGhee, Jr. and wife Polly of Mt. Vernon.
In addition to her husband, Charles D. Tate, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Brenda Gail McGhee and Carol Ann Keele; son-in-law, Leon Keele; brothers, Max Elliott, Dawsey Elliott, Donald Elliott, Dennis Elliott and Marvin Elliott; and sisters, Della Justice, Deloris Johnson, and Linda Mosher.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Tate will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon) Friday, June 19, 2026, at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix, with Rev. Jason Webb officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service, Friday, June 19, 2026, at the funeral home.
