Three area fire departments responded to Sandoval Junior/Senior High School early Monday night to an automatic alarm and later finding of smoke in the Cafetorium.

Firefighters traced the problem to an overheated rooftop air conditioning unit. The unit was shut down and the building cleared of smoke. Superintendent Matt Dannaman says a repairman has determined the issue was caused by a burned out fan motor.

Sandoval Firemen received mutual aid on the scene from the Odin and Centralia Fire Protection Districts while the Centralia City Fire Department stood by at the Sandoval Fire Station in the event of another fire.

In a community notice, Dannaman said after a thorough assessment, it was determined that the only damage sustained was to the HVAC system itself. He says school personnel and maintenance staff are working closely with service providers to address the HVAC issue.

Dannaman says summer school will be held at Sandoval Junior/Senior High at the regular time on Tuesday.

Dannaman also thanked the fire departments for their quick response, professionalism and assistance.
