Members of the community are invited to join in Saturday as work begins of the Harlem Globetrotter building wrap-around in Laura Leake Park.
Artist and Designer Jamie Allen says the project has been in the works for a couple of years.
“The entire building at Laura Leake Park will be wrapped completely in paint,” Allen said. “We will have the Globetrotter colors, which is the red, white, blue, and some gold. We’re going to have the five Globetrotters that are from Centralia on one side of the mural, we’re going to have the Orphans logo since they were all Orphans, and we’ll have the Globetrotter logo on another side.
Allen explained how the project got started.
“I was approached by Malaya Downey when she was on the Juneteenth committee with this idea, and she asked if this was something I would be interested in. Of course, it was an immediate yes from me. It’s been a couple of years in the making to get this project rolling.”
Those who want to help paint the building should come to Laura Leake park between nine and noon. Allen and a few other artists will work next week on finishing the painting. An unveiling ceremony is planned next Saturday at 12:40 as part of the Juneteenth Celebration in Laura Leake Park.
