The Salem City Council has sworn in Ian King as the city’s new police chief. King was promoted from Sergeant. King first joined the Salem Police Department in 2019 and became a sergeant last April. He worked at the Marion County Sheriff’s Department as a communications officer and correctional officer for seven years before that.
Police Chief Tyler Rose says two open sergeant positions will not be filled until the Police Commission puts together a new eligibility list. In addition to King’s position, another Sergeant position is open following the retirement of Craig Phillips last week after 27 and a half years on the Salem Police Department and more than 30 in law enforcement.
One patrolman position is also now open that will require the Police Commission finalizing a new eligibility list for that job. Applications are not yet being sought.
