A single vehicle multiple rollover crash has claimed one life on westbound I-64 near the Washington-Jefferson County line at 6:08 Saturday morning. One other person in the vehicle was airlifted to a St. Louis Hospital for treatment of injuries.
State Police say about an hour and a half after that crash, another occurred in the westbound lanes as traffic was backing up. Initial information from emergency crews on the scene indicates a box truck failed to stop and rear-ended a semi, which was trying to get out of the way. The box truck then hit a car in front of the semi and came to rest on top of it. Two occupants of the car were transported by Washington County Ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
I-64, in both directions, was initially closed. The eastbound lanes reopened by 7:30 Saturday morning, while the westbound lanes were closed throughout the morning.
Emergency response agencies were already out with another crash that occurred at the I-64 eastbound exit ramp at the Woodlawn exit at 5:08 am, where a pickup truck rear-ended a truck pulling a flat-bed trailer. State Police say there was at least one injury. There was a partial lane blockage, with traffic still able to get through.
The names of those involved in the crashes have not been released.
Jefferson, Woodlawn, and Irvington Fire, along with the Washington and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Departments, State Police, Washington County Ambulance, and Litton’s Ambulance, were called to the scene to assist.
