The Centralia Rotary Club hosted the 42nd annual Rotary Civic Luncheon at Calumet Street Church on Monday afternoon. The luncheon is an annual event to show appreciation for members of local civic organizations. Guests were treated to a Thanksgiving dinner in the church gymnasium.

The guest speaker at the luncheon this year was Damon Harbison, president of SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. Harbison talked about his history growing up in southern Illinois and how throughout his career, he’s seen the importance of volunteer efforts to building community.

“I’ve seen firsthand how volunteers are the lifeblood of our hospitals, schools, churches and civic organizations. They’re the ones who make things happen, quietly, consistently, and with heart. Volunteers understand the value of giving back. They know that real progress happens when we work together, when we partner with local organizations, support public health initiatives, and foster a culture of service across our schools, churches and businesses.”

Harbison said he felt encouraged by new businesses and developers coming to the region and gave credit to the efforts of local civic organizations for investing time and effort in improving their communities.

Each civic organization in the area was named in a roll call, and members of those organizations in attendance were recognized and thanked by the Rotary Club for their contributions to the community.
