Exie Murlene Harvey, 93, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 8:55 pm July 27, 2026 at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor in Mount Vernon. She was born February 12, 1933 in Bonnie, Illinois to the late Will and Effie (Belcher) Owings. Exie married Harold Harvey on March 26, 1949. He preceded her in death on May 19, 2004.
Exie is survived by her children, Gary Harvey and wife, Kathy, Greg Harvey and wife, Debbie, and Jill Staley and husband, Wayne; grandchildren, Kristi Stackle and husband, Charlie, Staci Venatta and husband, Jamie, Holly Shirley and husband, John, Jessica Karch and husband, Aaron, Christopher Harvey and wife, Lindsay, Matthew Staley and wife, Jade, and Melody Gallo and husband, Andrew; great-grandchildren, Alexis Stackle and fiancé, Jacob Pender, Grace Castello and husband, Noe, Andrew Stackle, Brayden Venatta, Colten Venatta and fiancée, Hailey Wiesler, Jackson Venatta, Hunter Shirley, Josie Shirley, Griffin Shirley, Brady Karch, Alivia Harvey, Toby Harvey, Rhett Staley, Aubrey Staley, Jerritt Staley, and Talullah Gallo; sisters, Maidie Leslie and Mellie Young; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her beloved husband and parents, Exie was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Clayton Stackle; and siblings, Vera Hunter, Cecil Hunter, Mary Burns, and Lova Swafford.
Exie was a faithful Christian and a devoted member of East Salem Baptist Church. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she found great joy and comfort in regularly reading her Bible. Exie was blessed with many talents. She was an exceptional seamstress who created beautiful pieces with care and skill. Her homemade meals were a true expression of her love, and the memories of them will be cherished by her family for years to come. She had a passion for antique collecting and a natural gift for interior decorating, bringing warmth and beauty into every space she touched. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Exie was always ready to take on any project around the house. She was a handy woman in her own right, fixing and tidying up anything that came her way. Above all, Exie treasured the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. Her love, generosity, and devotion will continue to live on through the lives of those who knew and loved her. She will be remembered as a devoted mother, cherished grandmother, beloved sister, caring aunt, and dear friend to many.
A Visitation will be held Friday, July 31, 2026 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 2:30 pm with Matthew Staley officiating. Interment will follow at Smith-Veterans Cemetery in Belle Rive, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Exie’s honor to East Salem Baptist Church or Smith-Veterans Cemetery.
