Pigg Leads Stallions, Koch Battles Through Heat To Finish For Team Score

The CORLHS XC team ran at The Murphysboro Invitational this afternoon. It was their 2nd race in as many days after a Quad meet in Salem yesterday. Running on tired legs didn’t stop senior Lady Stallion Rylee Brammeier from another really strong performance. Despite just missing the Top 20 (which were awarded T-shirts) Brammier ran a very solid time (21:55) for the 3-mile course, on the hot day and finished 22nd out of 93 girls in the Varsity race!

-The Stallion boys runners were affected in different ways by the back to back meets. Sophomore Carson Pigg didn’t skip a beat and had his best race of the season to date placing 13th (16:51) and grabbing a T-shirt for his Top 20 finish! COR usual #2 Zerek Koch suffered a different fate, as he would get off to a strong start first mile, but the daunting task of 2 meets in a row and an overly quick start combined with a hot September day caused Koch to become dizzy and collapse on the course with about 200 meters to go in the race. Koch was down for about :45 seconds but was able to gain composure and finish the race, giving the Stallions a team score as they would only run 5 on the Varsity level today. Had he failed to finish they would have not had enough runners for a team score. His effort to get up and finish was admirable but his time and place were definitely affected as he would finish 65th overall (19:55). Meanwhile sophomore Wyatt Gregory is stringing together a great early season, with his 3rd strong race in a row and today was his best of the 2024 season so far, as he would finish 36th (18:42). Sr. Isaiah Lyons continues to improve each race and today may have been his best this far as he would break the 20 minute mark and run close to Gregory finishing in 52nd (19:26). Freshman Cameron Jones labored today as any Freshman unaccustomed to running in back to back meets would but still managed to finish 83rd (21:41) to round out the scoring for The Stallions, who finish 9th as a team at the meet out of 25 teams represented, despite Koch’s tough day and running back to back races 2 days in a row! In the long run weeks like this build mental toughness and will help this team later in the season!

-In the JV race Liagel Lyons finished 15th overall for the Stallions setting a PR in 23:42 and Fr. Jeremy Jansen had his best finish of the season 30th (34:26) respectively.
