A 61-year-old Salem man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the January 2023 bank robbery of the Southern Illinois Bank in Zeigler.

Earl Morlan was also ordered to make $3,100 restitution to the bank.

Morlan still has charges in connection with the bank robbery pending in Franklin County Court at Benton, including a Class X felony armed robbery charge.  He was ordered to participate in drug and mental health treatment during his sentence.   The federal judge indicated the intention was that any Franklin County sentence run concurrent to the federal sentence.

Morlan had been taken into custody the day after the bank robbery after the Marion County Sheriff’s Department had identified him as the person in bank security footage of the holdup.
