The Salem City Council has approved a request from the Daffy Dill Garden Club to use the Bryan Memorial Park Statue Garden for the ‘Festival of Flowers’ on Saturday, June 22nd.

Sharon Blair of the Garden Club explained what is planned.

“Planning on having guided tours actually at the garden.  Talking about the evolution of that garden.  Perhaps giving insight to all the different flowers and plants that are out there.”

Blair says tours of gardens at individual homes will not be part of the program this year after all but two of those who were scheduled to be on the tour had to back out.

“Since we had already booked all of the vendors, which you know you have to book well in advance, we had to do something or we would lose them in the future.  That’s why we have decided to have this Festival of Flowers.  There are going to be lots of food, craft, and gardening vendors out there.  Some new ones and some old ones.”

The garden club’s main projects are maintaining the Statue Gardens as well as the downtown flower boxes.

Mayor Nic Farley announced he signed a proclamation declaring May 18th as Poppy Day in remembrance of all those who have died while in the service.  He also thanked all the volunteers who helped in the Keep Salem Beautiful cleanup and assisting with Prom and Post Prom.

Public Works Director Travis Sanders announced construction was getting underway this week on the addition to the maintenance shed in Tully Park.

Police Chief Kyle Ambuehl announced 46 pounds of drugs were collected in the April Drug Take Back program.  He notes the amount is down most likely as a result of other agencies collecting no longer needed drugs and the drugs being accepted year round and not just on the two designated collection days each year.
