The City of Centralia has opened bids on the construction of a new raw water line from near Boulder on Carlyle Lake to the new water treatment plant.

The low bid from Haier Plumbing and Heating of Okawville was for $1,454,699.   Haier was one of three bidders.   City Clerk Kim Enke says the bid was near the engineer’s estimate.

Haier was also the low bidder at $ 4.1 million on construction of the arterial water lines that will hook the new plant on West Green Street to the waterlines leaving the existing water plant on old US 51 that is being replaced.

Bids were also opened earlier on the construction of the new water plant itself.  Korte and Luitjohan of Highland is the apparent low bidder at $27.9 million without any alternates being taken.

That brings the bids on all three components of the project to $33,469,000.

Enke says the bids are expected to be brought before the city council in late May after a review is completed by the city’s engineer on the project, Curry and Associates of Nashville.  Construction could begin as soon as November.  The city is still seeking grant money to bring down the local share of the project.
