A man wanted on an Arizona parole violation apparently drowned when trying to swim away from a traffic stop by Vandalia Police early Monday morning.

The man reportedly fled officers on foot following the traffic stop on I-70 eastbound at mile marker 64.  After entering a nearby body of water, the man continued to swim away from the officers until he went under and didn’t resurface.

The Fayette County Emergency Management Agency Dive Team was joined by the Effingham County and Keyesport Fire Department Dive Team. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Fayette County Sheriff’s Department also joined the effort.

The name of the man has not been released pending notification of relatives.
