Two Cahokia Heights residents were killed when their vehicle was hit by a car being pursued by a Cahokia Heights police officer in East St. Louis.

Illinois State Police say 60-year-old Marilyn Hill and 73-year-old Willie Bufford were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at 2:19 Friday afternoon.

State Police say the Cahokia Heights police officer spotted a car traveling at a high rate of speed and while attempting to catch up to initiate enforcement action it was observed traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Bond Avenue.  The vehicle being chased struck the car occupied by Hill and Bufford on the driver’s side as they were turning left into a driveway.  The driver of the speeding car, who has not been identified by police, then tried to flee the scene of the crash, pulled out a firearm, and accidentally shot himself.   He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

East St. Louis Police have asked State Police to investigate the incident.
