Iuka Firemen name fire fighter of the year; release annual statistics

The Iuka Fire Department firefighter of the year is Jim Halfacre. Halfacre received the award at the department’s annual awards and appreciation dinner on Tuesday from Chief Kenny Eagan. The award is voted upon by his peers.

Halfacre rejoined the department in 202 after having served for several years prior . He had the highest number of calls made by any firefighter at 107.

Chief Eagan also recognized Firefighter Bryan Smith for the extra efforts he has made towards building the new training facility. The board of trustees approved the purchase of the three shipping containers which are being fashioned to simulate a ranch style home. Smith has played an integral part in preparing the containers for training.

Eagan announced the department handled 142 calls during 2023. That was down from the prior year, but about average for the district. The calls included 99 for emergency medical service, eight structure fires, one recreational vehicle fire, nine motor vehicle accidents, six mutual aid calls and ten good intent calls.
