A 27-year-old Waltonville man has died after being found unconscious and unresponsive in his Jefferson County Jail cell early Wednesday morning after apparently harming himself.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department reports Jacob Hunsell was transported to Crossroads Hospital Emergency Room where he was pronounced dead a short time later.  The employee who found Hunsell, along with other correctional officers, quickly responded to provide aid and EMS personnel were dispatched to the jail.  They then took over resuscitation efforts.

Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse responded and notified Hunsell’s family.   Hunsell was found at 3:14 on Wednesday morning.

As standard procedure for any in-custody death, the Illinois State Police was contacted and responded to investigate the circumstances surrounding Hunsell’s death. The Sheriff’s Office will also be conducting a parallel administrative investigation into the circumstances.   Further information will be made available upon the completion of both investigations.

The Sheriff and his staff are sending their condolences to the family of Jacob Hunsell.
