The Salem Wildcats fell at home to visiting Columbia 44-40 in double overtime last night at B.E. Gum. Columbia had a shot at the buzzer at the end of regulation but couldn’t get the go ahead bucket. Salem trailed by 3 in the 2nd overtime with 3 seconds left but missed 2 of 3 free throws and the Eagles Sam Donald finished off the game hitting 2 free throws to ice it. Donald struggled from the field but the 6-8 guard still finished with 23 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists. The Cats struggled from the free throw line as a team shooting just 6 of 12 while the Eagles made 12 of 16. Salem out rebounded the Eagles 20-19. Noah Nix led Salem with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Connor Tennyson added 8 and Sam Greene finished with 6. Salem falls to 2-7 on the season and 0-2 in the Cahokia as they get set to host Olney on Tuesday.
Today, the Salem Fresh/Soph will play games at Odin starting at 10am.
Also today in varsity action, Mount Vernon is at home against Effingham.
Last night, South Central fell at Altamont on the Indians Homecoming 63-39. The Cougars did not have a double digit scorer. Brody Markley led SC with 9 points, Max Magnus added 8. The Cougars drop to 4-3 on the season and will play Ramsey today with a noon JV start followed by the varsity. SC opened the night with a win in the Fresh/Soph game and fell in the JV contest.
The Centralia Orphans got 18 points from Dustin Collins and 17 from freshman Mike Organ in their 71-24 win over Cahokia to improve to 8-0 on the season. Cruz Harlan added 10 for the Orphans as they held a 56-17 lead after 3 quarters.
