Salem City Council Monday night to consider garbage rate adjustment

By WJBD Staff Dec 4, 2023 | 8:45 AM

The Salem City Council Monday night will be asked to approve an increase in the garbage collection and leaf collection fees.

The proposed increase for the garbage collection fee is from $14.50 to $19.50 per month. The leaf collection fee would increase from $2.45 to $5.50.

City Manager Rex Barbee says the garbage fee has been operating at a loss for several years and adjustments are needed to reduce or eliminate the shortfall in that account.

The council will be asked to lower cost structures to some larger industrial customers after a review of recently adopted natural gas meter charges.

There will be a review and possible approval of a proposed pre-development agreement with Conant Development on a 72-unit apartment complex off Airport Road behind the current Salem Aire apartment complex. The agreement would allow Conant to recapture up to $ 1-million in development costs from the TIF or tax increment financing district.

A proposal will be made by A Power, LLC to place solar panels in the area of the closed Salem landfill.

The meeting begins at six on Monday night at Salem City Hall.
