One person was injured and airlifted from the scene of a crash on Route 161 at the Burge Road east of Centralia Friday afternoon.

Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies say the crash occurred when 84-year-old Phyllis Schwartz of Barker Road in Centralia made a left-hand turn from Route 161 to Burge Road into the path of a westbound car driven by 36-year-old Tiffany Hammock of Bluford.   Both Phyllis Schwartz and Hammock escaped injury.

A passenger in the Schwartz vehicle, 86-year-old James Schwartz of Centralia, was injured and airlifted from the scene to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment.  The air ambulance landed in a nearby field with assistance from EMS and the Salem Fire Protection District.  Fire officials say James Schwartz was not trapped in the vehicle.

Phyllis Schwartz was ticketed for failure to yield when turning left.

The crash occurred at 3:40 Friday afternoon.
