The Salem Wildcats saw their offense stymied by an aggressively fast Breese Central defense that held Salem to negative rushing yards through 3 quarters and Salem dropped their Cahokia matchup in Clinton County 41-7.
The game was 7-0 after the first quarter, but the Cougars would score 3 times in the 2nd to turn that to a 27-0 halftime lead. Kaden Rakers had a big game rushing 11 times for 145 yards including touchdown runs of 1, 5, 5 and 51 yards. Cole Davis added 14 carries for 107 yards and a score.
Salem’s offense was all through the air, as senior quarterback Sam Greene finished the game 14-of-27 for 07 yards and a 17 yard touchdown pass to Noah Nix. Miking Ettress caught 5 balls for 86 yards and Conner Tennyson added 7 catches for 90.
Salem is 3-3 and will host Columbia next week for Homecoming and Senior Night. The Cats will need to win at least 2 of their final 3 games to become playoff eligible as they will be on the road at Freeburg and Charleston to finish the final 2 weeks of the season.
In other Cahokia Conference games, Columbia won their first game of the year keeping Wood River winless winning 42-0, Roxana is still undefeated 55-21 over Freeburg setting up a battle of conference unbeatens next week with Central and Roxana.
Also last night, Belleville Althoff trailed 21-6 just before halftime, but the Crusader’s came roaring back to win their 8th straight against the Kahoks by a final of 38-27. 4-star recruit Dierre Hill rushed for 161 yards on 14 carries and had 2 interceptions.
