The Salem Wildcats improved to 3-1 on the season as they opened the Cahokia Conference with a dominant 41-6 victory over East Alton Wood River. The Cats offense did anything they wanted, and their defense also got in on the scoring action.
Freshman Trey Clark ripped the ball out at the 1 yard line late in the first half and took it 99 yards for a touchdown. Miking Ettress also had a long touchdown reception as Sam Greene used his arm and his legs to keep the offense going. After a slow start defensively with penalties keeping Oiler drives alive, the Cats were better as the game went on.
Greene led Salem’s rushing attack going for 81 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jeremiah Reinhart added 43 yards. Greene finished 8 of 9 for 161 yards with touchdowns to Ettress (52 yds), Connor Tennyson (17 yds) and Lyric Black (23 yds).
Salem will be back at home next week when they host state ranked Roxana who stayed undefeated by keeping Columbia winless in a 37-0 victory.
Also in the Cahokia, Preston Baker had 4 touchdowns to lead Central over Freeburg 37-14 in the Root Rivalry Game. Central is 3-1, Freeburg is 2-2.
