State Police have released details on two crashes on I-57.

The first occurred Friday morning on southbound I-57 at milepost 123 just north of the Martin Road overpass between the Salem and Kinmundy exits.  Preliminary information indicates for unknown reasons, a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old female juvenile from Zion ran off the right side of the roadway and struck the guardrail’s face.  The vehicle turned sideways and overturned multiple times.

The driver along with five family members, all from Zion, were taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Kinmundy-Alma Fire Chief Kevin Day says all six were out of the vehicle upon the arrival of emergency help from Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies, United Medical Response, and the fire department.

The driver was ticketed for improper lane usage. The crash was reported at 7:56 Friday morning.

The second crash occurred early Saturday morning.  Preliminary information indicates a semi ran off the left side of the northbound lanes at milepost 134 a mile south of the Farina exit at the Marion-Fayette County line.  The driver overcorrected and came back onto the roadway and overturned, blocking the right lane and partially blocking the left lane.  State Police say a second semi was northbound in the left lane and struck the overturned trailer causing the second semi to travel off the right side of the roadway and overturn.

Both drivers were transported to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.  Farina and Kinmundy-Alma ambulances each transported a driver.

Both drivers were out of their rigs on their own.   The crash occurred at 4:24 on Saturday morning.  The northbound lanes were partially blocked until the wreckage could be removed.
