The Wamac Board of Alderman Monday night approved the location of a solar energy farm at Center Street and Irvington Road on the west side of town.
Mayor Butch Mathis says the facility to be built by Trajectory Energy will produce two megawatts of power and result in $476,331 in property tax dollars over its lifetime including $20,733 in its first year. Construction will begin next year. The land is currently used as a farm field.
Mathis notes Wamac has long been involved in energy production starting with coal, then oil, and now clean energy. He anticipates a second solar farm will also be locating in the community.
The Wamac Board approved the annual Wamacfest to be held on Saturday, September 16th. Music will be provided by Bob Bone and others to be named later. There will be inflatables and games hosted by the Cub Scouts. The famous Timmons Family BBQ will be featured.
A Friday, September 1st, carry-out lunch will be available at Wamac City Hall to help raise money for Wamacfest. The $5 lunch includes a BBQ sandwich, chips, and baked beans.
The board approved its annual appropriations ordinance. The $1,770,074 appropriation is up slightly from last year.
The board approved a five-year lease at $60 a year to utilize Gillmore Street.
National Rail Safety Week will be recognized in Wamac the week of September 18th through the 24th.
