A 2023 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School has been identified as the 18-year-old killed when struck by a car while on a sidewalk in the 600 block of Main Street on Sunday night.
Courtney Jo Estes was pronounced dead on the scene.
Meanwhile, the man driving the vehicle had bond set at $200,000 in Jefferson County Court on Tuesday on charges of failure to report a crash involving a death, felony aggravated DUI resulting in death, reckless homicide, felony aggravated reckless driving, failure to report a crash involving death and driving on a suspended license. The bond for Mitchell Sharp was reportedly done without him being present after he refused to come out of the Jefferson County Jail cell where he was being held.
After his vehicle struck a house before coming to a stop, Sharp allegedly fled without clothing from the vehicle but was stopped a short distance away. He was treated for injuries at an Evansville, Indiana hospital before being brought to jail.
Funeral services for Estes will be held at one Friday afternoon at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with visitation from 11 until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the Jefferson County Animal Shelter.
Estes is described in the obituary as being a cheerleader full of spirit who also ran track and cross country in school.
Mt. Vernon Township High School is offering staff to offer assistance to any student or past student who needs to talk about the death.
