The Salem City Council has approved a new ten year lease with Salem Community High School for continued use of Tully Park for the high school’s softball teams.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering told the city council Monday night the school is planning some improvements with the new deal in place.

“We are looking at a project to replace the fence and backstop from dugout to dugout, entirely at the schools cost, but before we entered into a project of that scope and cost, we wanted to make sure we had a commitment to play there for an extended period of time.”

The lease will run from March 1st to June 5th of each year.  The city would retain the usage in the off season and on dates that are not being used for practices and games by SCHS.

The council agreed to ask Enterprise Leasing to obtain a one ton truck chassis for a dump bed and four Ford Explorers with the Police Interceptor package.   The vehicles won’t arrive until early next year.  City Manager Rex Barbee says the city will still have the option not to accept the vehicles.  With the lease purchase agreement, the police department will be able to get four new vehicles at less than the cost in the budget to purchase two vehicles.

The council agreed to sell two remaining parcels of the Salem National Guard Armory property.  Adam Phillips bid $1,000 to purchase a lot at the corner of Pearl and Olive adjacent to his home.  Keith McNeil bid $500 to buy the former parking lot at North College and Warmoth Street.

Walmart employees were approved to seek donations for the Children’s Miracle Network at West Main and College Street intersection June 29th and 30th.

Mayor Nic Farley announced he is currently seeking someone to fill openings on the Bryan Bennett Library and the Historical Commission.   Those interested can leave their information at Salem City Hall or e-mail him through the city’s website.

Police Chief Kyle Ambuehl announced body cams are now in use by all officers and they are being trained this week on use of the new tasers that are also being implemented.
