The Salem Fire Protection District was called to what turned out to be a smoke scare Tuesday morning at the Joel Gunther home at 222 West Porter Street.

Firemen received the call after smoke began filling the home and the smoke detector sounded.

Assistant Fire Chief Bill Fulton says the problem turned out to be a fire place chimney that was too short was allowing smoke to reenter the home from a nearby vent.

The fire call came in at 8:15 Tuesday morning.  Firemen were on the scene about a half hour to make sure there was no fire on the roof.

There was no damage.
