The Salem Fire Protection District was called to assist the Salem Public Works Department after a vacant home was found with copper piping cut and natural gas spewing in the air.
Salem Police say a neighbor first smelled a strong odor of gas and the city gas crew responded. They found the source of the gas in a home in the 500 block of North Hamilton Street. After turning off the gas, the fire department was called to use their large fan to clear the concentration of the gas from the home.
Fortunately the issue was resolved without any difficulties.
The call came in at 1:32 Sunday afternoon.
