Just five Illinois counties are now at an elevated risk for COVID-19 transmission. Those five counties are rated at a medium risk of the virus. The rest of the state is considered at low levels of COVID activity.
But State Public Health Director Dr. Sameer Vohra says the virus is still present and only 19-percent of the general population in Illinois has received one of the latest boosters.
Vohra says, “Those COVID-19 vaccinations continue to make an impact to prevent hospitalizations and death. Also know that you have tools like medications at your disposal. We’re continuing to talk through and encourage people to get vaccinations but also use these other strategies to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.”
Nearly half of those 65 and older have received the bivalent booster.
Earlier this week, Governor JB Pritzker announced that the State Public Health Emergency for COVID will end in May.
