Salem Community High School Athletic Director Kevin Greene gave an update on the athletic department to the school board Monday night.

Greene outlined present activities and future goals including an upgrade to the weight room, investigation of video boards for the gym and upgrades for the sound systems in the gym and football fields.

Other highlights of his report:

  • The district has hosted the conference cross country meeting, the IHSA girls sectional in golf and the IHSA regional in volleyball.
  • Green has met with all the fall coaches but one to discuss their evaluation and hear their needs for their programs as well as set goals for next year.
  • During the current winter season, the boys and girls bowling teams are conference champions, the boys are regional and sectional champions and will compete in the state tournaments this weekend.
  • The wrestling program is up and running with good numbers. The team continues to improve their team performance.  This past weekend at the Goreville Tournament, there were two 34d place finishes and two fourth place finishes.
  • The boys and girls basketball teams had successful Christmas Tournaments, with the boys winning the consolation championship at Pinckneyville and the girls were fourth at the Benton Tournament. The 71st Salem Invitational basketball team won the consolation championships at the Vandalia tournament.
  • Salem Community High School will be hosting the 2A IHSA girls basketball super sectional and 2A IHSA boys track sectional.
  • The winter speed training is going three days a week with over 50 off season athletes from football, soccer, baseball and softball.

The board approved seeking a $50,000 maintenance grant from the Illinois State Board of Education to be matched with $50,000 in local funds to replace three exterior doors and update all exterior doors in the main building.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering presented the second quarter financial report.  Halfway through the fiscal year, Detering indicate the budget looked pretty good.  He feels the district would be able to eliminate the deficits in the Education and Building Funds.

In personnel news, the board accepted the resignation of Cheer Coach Sarah Beth Williams.  She has been coach the last 15 years.  The board also accepted the resignation of Natalie Maxey as assistant girls volleyball coach.
