Illinois State Police say two Shreveport, Louisiana residents were killed in a crash on northbound I-57 at milepost 102.5 early Tuesday morning.

Preliminary investigation indicates the two were passengers in an SUV that made contact with a semi-truck traveling in front of it as the lanes in the construction zone south of Dix merged from two lanes to one lane.

The vehicle driven by a 40-year-old Shreveport, Louisiana man then left the roadway and overturned several times.  Two passengers were ejected and later pronounced deceased on the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner.  The driver and two other passengers were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

The two killed are identified as a 67-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman from Shreveport, Louisiana.   Their names have not been released pending notification of the family.

The injured included the driver, a 41-year-old female from Shreveport, and a juvenile from Shreveport.

The Jefferson Fire Protection District reports four of the occupants were thrown from the vehicle, while the fourth was walking around upon their arrival.

The crash occurred at 1:18 Tuesday morning.  The northbound lanes were closed for several hours during the crash investigation.
