Six fire departments were called to fight a fire that heavily damaged S and K Carports in Opdyke Friday afternoon.
Jefferson Fire Protection District officials say the fire started between the old flat roof and a pitched roof later added onto the building. Smoke and fire were coming through the roof upon their arrival. The owners had just left when a neighbor called to say smoke was coming out of the building. The 50 by 30-foot concrete block building is expected to be a total loss.
The area where the fire started is used for storage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office.
The business is owned by Larry Severs.
The fire call came in around three Friday afternoon with firemen on the scene until around six pm. Jefferson Fire Protection District called Mt. Vernon, Benton, Ewing Northern, Bluford, and Waltonville to the scene, while Kell and Woodlawn covered the Jefferson Fire Protection District Station in the event of another fire.
