The Illinois State Police is looking to broaden the use of ‘Clear and Present Danger’ reports when it comes to reviewing FOID card applications.
The ISP has filed an emergency rule to make better use of prior Clear and Present Danger reports filed about a person who is now seeking a FOID card. State Police Director Brendan Kelley says previously the State Police was limited.
“So that means that our folks will be able to look at a FOID card application or FOID card renewal to determine if that Clear and Danger that was reported yesterday, last week, a month ago, a year ago, two years ago may be appropriate to prohibit someone from having a firearm over the long term.”
Kelly says they want to make the rule permanent. The review of the process comes after the Highland Park mass shooting where the suspect was investigated for being a Clear and Present Danger to himself and others.
