Illinois Fire Marshal’s office says leave the fireworks to the professionals

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office is urging the public to leave fireworks to the professionals.

State Fire Marshal spokesperson JC Fultz says fireworks and even novelty items like sparklers can be dangerous, causing fires or a trip to the emergency room.  He notes last summer in Illinois, 202 people were injured by fireworks and one person died.

“That is just what is reported.  We are aware of more injuries that occurred throughout the June and July period because of the use of fireworks.  Over half the injuries occurred to persons over the age of 22.  50 percent of all injuries affected hands.”

Fultz reminds just one touch to the skin may cause permanent damage or scarring.

“Sparklers burn at over 1200 degrees.  That’s hot enough to melt many metals and turn steel glowing red so instantaneous touch can cause burns that may result in permanent damage or scarring. Please maybe think of something else to use.  Glow sticks are great, silly string, and other things you can use to celebrate the Fourth of July.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association, an estimated 19,500 fires started by fireworks were reported to local fire departments in the US in 2018. These fires caused five civilian deaths, 46 civilian injuries, and $105 million in indirect property damage in the United States.
