ST. LOUIS (AP) — Dakota Hudson and a quartet of relievers combined to help the St. Louis Cardinals stop San Francisco’s six-game winning streak, blanking the Giants 4-0. The Cardinals pitched their sixth shutout of the season. The Los Angeles Angels began the day with a major league-leading seven shutouts. Yadier Molina doubled, singled, and scored a run. Molina’s 2,128th career hit moved him past Mike Piazza to give him the sixth-most hits among catchers. St. Louis led 1-0 in the fifth when the Giants put runners at first and third with two outs. Molina threw out Joc Pederson trying to steal second to end the inning. Tommy Edman homered as the Cardinals won for the second time in seven games.
PHOENIX (AP) — Yan Gomes hit a solo homer and added a go-ahead single in the ninth inning to lift the Chicago Cubs over the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2. The Cubs have won three out of their past five games. That is welcome good news for the franchise after it dropped eight of nine. The game was tied at 1 until the Cubs sent eight batters to the plate in the decisive ninth. Willson Contreras walked, Seiya Suzuki singled and Ian Happ walked to load the bases with no outs, bringing up Gomes, who lined a single into center to make it 2-1.

— The Houston Astros’ 11-game winning streak has come to an emphatic end. The Astros were one short of tying the longest winning streak in team history until Yadiel (YAH’-dee-ehl) Hernandez and Maikel (MY’-kehl) Franco homered in the Nationals’ 13-6 rout of Houston. Hernandez supplied the first four runs with a single and a three-run blast. Nelson Cruz had a three-run double, two singles, and a walk for the Nationals — who improved to 5-14 at home. Houston hurlers had carved out a 0.91 ERA during the winning streak.
— Luis Barrera crushed a three-run, homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Athletics a 4-3 win versus the Angels in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The A’s trailed 3-1 with two out in the ninth before ending a seven-game home losing streak. Pinch-hitter Anthony Rendon hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning for Los Angeles, which fell a win short of matching the best 35-game start in club history.
— The Angels rolled to a 9-1 rout of the A’s in the nightcap as Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) banged out his 100th career home run and Taylor Ward hit a grand slam. That was more than enough support for Michael Lorenzen, who allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. Ohtani is the third Japanese-born player to homer 100 times in MLB history, joining Hideki Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki.
— The White Sox pulled out a 3-2 win over the Yankees on Luis Robert’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Yoan (yoh-AHN’) Moncada homered and Dallas Keuchel (KY’-kul) threw five shutout innings to help Chicago win for the eighth time in 11 games. Kyle Higashioka (hih-gah-shee-OH’-kah) tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the Yanks before New York ended a five-game winning streak.
— The Blue Jays ended a five-game skid as Teoscar Hernandez and Danny Jansen homered in the eighth inning of their 5-1 verdict over the Rays. Jansen hit a two-run shot in his first game since missing over a month with an oblique injury. Tampa Bay was blanked after Yandy Diaz homered leading off the bottom of the first.
— Four relievers combined for 7 2/3 innings of four-hit reliever in the Tigers’ 3-0 shutout of the Orioles. Wily Peralta (WIH’-lee peh-RAHL’-tah) worked 2 2/3 innings after starter Michael Pineda took a line drive to his bare hand in the second inning. Eric Haase and Willi Castro homered for the Tigers, who turned four double plays in clinching their first series win at home this season.
— J.D. Martinez extended his on-base streak to 31 games with a first-inning homer as the Red Sox clinched their first series victory in a month, 11-3 at Texas. Rafael Devers (DEH’-vurz) also homered and Kiké Hernández drove in three runs to back 42-year-old Rich Hill, who pitched into the seventh in his return from the COVID list. Boston had only won one of its first 10 series, taking two of three at Detroit from April 11-13.
— Andrés Giménez ripped a go-ahead double in the 10th inning and scored an insurance run after a collision on the bases, sending the Guardians past the Twins, 3-2. Cleveland starter Shane Bieber tiptoed through six innings, allowing seven hits and walking three but leaving the bases loaded twice. Minnesota’s Gio Urshela (ur-SHEH’-lah) smacked a solo homer in the fourth inning and drove in the extra runner in the 10th on an infield single.
— Bryce Harper homered at Dodger Stadium for the third straight game, one of four launched by the Phillies in an 8-3 thumping. Jean Segura, Kyle Schwarber, and Rhys Hoskins also had home runs off Dodgers starter Julio Urías (oo-REE’-uhs). Ranger Suárez went a season-high seven innings and won for the third time in his last four starts.
— Marcell Ozuna (oh-ZOO’-nah) homered and Austin Riley hit a tiebreaking double during a four-run eighth that gave the Braves a 6-5 victory over the Padres. The rally began after San Diego scored four in the eighth to take a 5-2 lead. The Braves tagged reliever Steven Wilson for Ozzie Albies’ RBI single, Ozuna’s two-run homer, and Riley’s go-ahead hit.
— Charlie Blackmon, Sam Hilliard, and Ryan McMahon hit home runs as the Rockies whipped the Royals, 10-4 to end a five-game slide. Germán (hehr-MAHN’) Márquez overcame one rough inning for his first victory this season, giving up three runs over six frames. Salvador Pérez and Bobby Witt Jr. homered for Kansas City.
— The Mets coughed up a 4-0 lead before Patrick Mazeika (mah-ZEE’-kah) belted a home run in the seventh inning of their 5-4 triumph over the Mariners. Starling Marte tripled, doubled, singled, and scored three times for the winners, who almost wasted a strong 5 1/3-inning performance by Chris Bassitt. Jesse Winker tied it with a three-run homer off Chasen Shreve (CHAY’-sehn shreev) in the top of the seventh.
— Homers by Jesús Aguilar, Jorge Soler (HOHR’-hay soh-LEHR’), and Brian Anderson powered the Marlins past the Brewers, 9-3. Solo homers from Aguilar and Soler and Anderson’s two-run shot against Milwaukee starter Eric Lauer in the fourth helped the Marlins erase a 1-0 deficit. Miami starter Trevor Rogers pitched 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball, fanning eight and yielding five hits.
— Zach Thompson took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Daniel Vogelbach homered to lead the Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the Reds. Brandon Drury broke up the gem with a two-out single, the only hit allowed by Thompson over six frames. Thompson ran his scoreless streak to 12 innings after entering the game with a 7.08 ERA in six games, including five starts.
