UNDATED (AP) — The Florida Panthers were able to advance in the NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Calgary Flames weren’t as fortunate.
The Panthers have reached the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 4-3 overtime win over the Capitals in Game 6.
Series star Carter Verhaeghe followed his five-point performance in Game 5 by scoring 2:46 into the extra session. The goal came after TJ Oshie tied it on a power play with 63 seconds left in regulation.
Verhaeghe had six goals and six assists in the series for the Panthers, who hadn’t won a playoff round since reaching the 1996 Stanley Cup final. Claude Giroux had a goal and two assists for Florida.
The Caps haven’t won a series since winning the 2018 Stanley Cup.
The Rangers will host a Game 7 after a fluke goal put them ahead in a 5-3 win over the Penguins in Pittsburgh.
Chris Kreider took a shot that glanced off the glove of Louis Domingue, popped over the netminder’s head and across the goal line with 1:20 remaining.
Kreider and Mika Zibanejad each scored twice for the Blueshirts, who stormed back from a two-goal deficit to win for the second straight game. Zibanejad also had two assists, Adam Fox set up four goals and Andrew Kopp scored into an empty net.
Jeff Carter, Bryan Rust and Evgeni Malkin scored for the Penguins, who played without Sidney Crosby because of an upper-body injury suffered in Game 5.
Igor Shesterkin stopped 31 shots for the Rangers, who host Game 7 on Sunday.
The Stars wasted a 2-0 lead before forcing a Game 7 with a 4-2 downing of the Flames. Miro Heiskanen scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period.
Roope Hintz and Michael Raffl also scored for the wild-card Stars, and Tyler Seguin added an empty-netter. Jake Oettinger turned back 36 shots for the Stars, who take on the Flames in Calgary on Sunday.
Calgary had tied the game at 2 with 8:01 left in the second period on a goal by Mikael Backlund.
