COVID-19 cases show slow rise, but hospitalizations remain low

Cases of Covid-19 in Illinois increased by 39% this past week.

State Public Health Officials report more than 19,000 new infections.  That does not include those who only tested positive with an at-home kit.  But Governor JB Pritzker says there is some good news.

“We’ve seen something interesting so far with this new Covid Omicron subvariant and that is that even with a rise in cases we are not seeing a rise in hospitalizations.  Some very small upticks and even down ticks all across the state but on balance we are not seeing a significant rise or really any rise right now.”

All of south central Illinois remains at the low transmission rate.  Marion County had 12 new cases reported last week, an increase of 33%, but no new hospitalizations.  Marion County Health Department Administrator Melissa Mallow reported no new deaths and no congregate care facilities in outbreak status.

Clinton County reported 12 new cases and one new hospitalization.  Fayette County had 15 new cases and two new hospitalizations.  Clay County had under ten new cases and one new hospitalization.  Jefferson, Washington, and Wayne Counties all had under 10 new cases and no new hospitalizations.

Most of the state remains at low risk for transmission, although four counties: Dupage, Champaign, McClean and Piatt are considered at medium risk.  It’s advised that the elderly and immunocompromised wear a mas in indoor public settings in those four counties.
