The Blue Devils beat Tom Izzo’s Spartans 85-76 on Sunday in the Hall of Fame coaches’ bittersweet final tussle. Star freshman Paolo Banchero scored 19 points and muscled in the go-ahead drive through contact with 2:05 left, putting the Blue Devils ahead to stay in the record-extending 1,200th win of Krzyzewski’s career. Duke reached the Sweet 16 for the 26th time under Coach K, who announced last summer that his 42nd season with the Blue Devils would be his last. Duke faces Texas Tech in the West Region semifinals.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Gabe Kalscheur scored 22 points and 11th-seeded Iowa State surprised Wisconsin in the Badgers’ backyard, advancing to the Sweet 16 with a 54-49 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Izaiah Brockington added 10 points as the gritty Cyclones used their tough defense to hold off Johnny Davis and company in front of a raucous pro-Wisconsin crowd about 80 miles away from the school’s Madison campus. After winning just two games last season, Iowa State advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2016 and the sixth time in school history. It will play 10th-seeded Miami in the Midwest Region semifinals on Friday in Chicago.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Collin Gillespie scored 20 points, Eric Dixon hit a big 3-pointer late and second-seeded Villanova fended off seventh-seeded Ohio State 71-61 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats earned their eighth trip to the Sweet 16 under Jay Wright after surviving a second-half push from the Buckeyes. Ohio State trimmed a 15-point deficit to two before Villanova regained its footing. The Wildcats will continue its quest for a third national title in seven seasons when they face 11th-seeded Michigan in the South Region semifinals in San Antonio.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Kenzie Hauswirth broke a tie with 6:20 left and top-seeded Ohio State beat Minnesota Duluth 3-2 on Sunday for the Buckeyes’ first women’s Frozen Four championship. Hauswirth blasted a shot from the left side that deflected off a defender’s skate and slipped inside the far post. Paetyn Levis and Clair Degeorge also scored for Ohio State (32-6-0) and Amanda Thiele made 17 saves. The Buckeyes won their last 10 games and 11 of 12, setting a program record for victories in a season. Naomi Rogge and Elizabeth Giguere scored for Minnesota Duluth (27-12-1).
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Lauren Jensen scored 19 points, hitting a key 3-pointer with 12 seconds left, and No. 10 seed Creighton eliminated No. 2 seed Iowa from the NCAA tournament 64-62 on Sunday. Emma Ronziek and Payton Brotzki each had 13 points for the Bluejays (22-9), who advance to next week’s Greensboro Region semifinals. Iowa (24-8), which shared the Big Ten regular-season title and won the conference tournament, had two chances to tie the game in the closing three seconds. Monika Czinano missed a layup with three seconds left, then Kate Martin missed a putback as the buzzer sounded.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Freshman point guard Chucky Hepburn departed Wisconsin’s NCAA Tournament game against Iowa State in the first half with leg injury. Hepburn went down after contesting Tyrese Hunter’s layup with 4:37 left. Hepburn grabbed his left leg as he lay on the ground. He put no pressure on his leg as he was helped off the court.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Diamond Miller scored 24 points, and fourth-seeded Maryland used a 19-0 run spanning parts of both halves to pull away to a 89-65 win over 12th-seeded Florida Gulf Coast. Angel Reese added 21 points and Ashley Osusu scored 20 for the Terrapins, who advanced to the Sweet 16 for the 10th time under coach Brenda Frese. Maryland faces either Stanford or Kansas in the next round. Kendall Spray scored 17 points in the first half but none in the second for FGCU. The Eagles couldn’t follow their first-round win over Virginia Tech with another victory.
