Jefferson Fire Protection District officials say a three-car garage was destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon. Another fire destroyed a car that burned in a grass fire near Dix.
Firefighters say the three-car garage was on the Tammy Soule property in the 14-thousand block of North Harmony Lane east of Mt. Vernon. The garage was already involved in flames upon their arrival. It was destroyed. The home was close enough to the garage to sustain melted siding from the heat of the fire. However, firemen were able to keep the fire from spreading to the home. There were no vehicles in the garage.
Firemen say the cause of the fire has not been determined.
Jefferson Firemen called Bluford, Mt. Vernon, and Kell Firemen to the scene of the fire, while Woodlawn and Wayne City stood by at the Jefferson Fire Protection District in the event of another fire.
The fire call came in at 2:45 pm, with firemen on the scene for about an hour and a half.
Earlier in the afternoon, Jefferson Fire Protection District Firefighters were called to property occupied by Rebecca Wright in the 9900 block of Campbell Road northwest of Dix where a trash fire had spread into a field. The fire covered about an acre and burned up an older car that was in the field. That fire was reported at 1:46 Saturday afternoon.
There were no injuries reported in either fire.
Salem Firemen were also called out Saturday afternoon when a controlled burn moved into a fence row west of the Airport between Airport Road and I-57. The fire was extinguished without any damage.
