There’s been another fatal fire in Mt. Vernon.
One person was killed in the early Tuesday morning fire at a home in the 1500 block of Jones Street.
Fire Chief Kevin Sargent says the home was fully engulfed on their arrival and a male was found in the front yard. He was rushed by ambulance to a Mt. Vernon hospital and then airlifted to a burn unit in Springfield.
Sargent said the fire victim was able to tell them another person was still in the home. During the fire fighting effort, the body was recovered. The injured man reported he woke up to flames in the house.
The names of those involved are not being released pending notification of family.
The single-story home will be a total loss. The Illinois Fire Marshal’s office is currently on the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire.
Sargent says they were able to put out the fire without any major issues.
The fire call came in at 4:39 Tuesday morning. Firemen cleared the scene about an hour and a half later.
This is the second fatal fire in Mt. Vernon this month. A mother and her young baby were killed in ablaze. A third person was burned in that fire and transferred to the burn unit in Springfield.
