A 64-year-old St. Louis man was airlifted from the scene of a single pickup truck crash on westbound I-64 just before the rest area east of Mt. Vernon early Friday morning.
State Police say preliminary investigative details indicate Michael Stapleton for an unknown reason left the right side of the roadway and struck a tree with the front driver’s side.
Jefferson Fire Protection District officials had to extricate Stapleton from the vehicle.
A medical helicopter was called which flew Stapleton to an Evansville, Indiana hospital for treatment of serious injury.
The crash occurred at 12:15 Friday morning.
