The Salem Wildcats earned their biggest win of the year last night as they beat previously undefeated Freeburg 48-45.
The Wildcats led for all but just a few seconds of the game. Caleb Anthony got Salem going early scoring 8 of his 16 in the opening quarter. Brendan Phillips added 10 and Rolan Adams had 8 off the bench.
The Wildcats led by as many as 7 in the final quarter, but Freeburg didn’t give up and after Lane Otten drove to the basket and scored and was fouled with under 10 seconds left to cut Salem’s lead to 2, Caden Bee was fouled and hit one of 2 free throws giving the Midgets a chance with 3.3 seconds left and three-quarters of the length of the floor to go, however the Midgets couldn’t get a shot off before time expired. The win snaps Salem’s 4 game slide as they improve to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the Cahokia.
The Cats will travel to Wood River on Tuesday to finish their pre-Christmas portion of their schedule.
In Tournament Action:
At the Wayne City Tournament last night, Cisne beat Sandoval 65-52, Crab Orchard over North Clay 75-57 and Wayne City beat Edwards County 67-58. Today is trophy day starting with the 7th place game at 2:30 with Sandoval and Grayville, at 4pm its North Clay and Edwards County for 5th place, Cisne and Crab Orchard play for 3rd at 5:30 with the championship at 7pm between Wayne City and Webber Township.
At St Elmo last night, Windsor/Stew Stras advanced to the championship with their 46-32 win over Cumberland while Cowden Herrick knocked off Ramsey 69-48 in the consolation semifinal. Today’s trophy games start at 3pm with Mulberry Grove and Ramsey for 7th place, Patoka/Odin will take on CHBC in the Consolation championship at 4:30, South Central and Cumberland will meet in a battle of the top 2 tournament seeds for 3rd place at 6pm with St Elmo and Windsor in the title game at 7:30.
