The Salem Lady Cats earned their first win of the season as they knocked off visiting West Frankfort 52-37 at B.E. Gum.
Coming off her All Tournament performance at the Thanksgiving Tournament to open the season, Salem junior Alesia Keller scored 17 points, 13 in the fourth quarter to lead the way as well as pulling down 8 rebounds.. She was also 9-of-10 from the foul line. Katelyn Biegeleisan was held scoreless in the first half saddled with foul trouble, but scored 14 points in the 2nd half to help Salem to the win. They outscored the Redbirds 20-4 in the 4th quarter. Kayla Felgenhaur scored 10 of her 12 points in the opening quarter and Avery Bass pulled down 7 rebounds.
Salem was 13-of-17 from the free throw line as a team. They are 1-4 and will open the Cahokia Conference against the defending champion Breese Central Lady Cougars Thursday night in Salem.
The night opened with the Salem JV opening their season with a 34-19 victory.
South Central beat St Elmo/Brownstown 56-41. Laney Webster led the Lady Cougars with 19, Brooklyn Garrett added 18 in the win.
