UNDATED (AP) — Alex Ovechkin allowed Washington Capitals to win a battle of two of the NHL’s best teams.
Ovechkin registered his 28th career hat trick and the Caps won for the eighth time in 10 games, 4-3 over the Panthers. The left winger scored twice in a 56-second span of the second period and pulled within 19 goals of former Cap Jaromir Jagr for third on the league’s all-time list.
Tom Wilson also scored and Evgeny Kuzentsovhad three assists as Washington ended Florida’s four-game winning streak.

— The Lightning picked up a 3-0 win over the Kraken as Andrei Vasilevskiy made 17 saves in his 200th victory. Steven Stamkos, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Ross Colton in Tamp Bay’s sixth win in seven games.
— Sebastian Aho scored twice and the Hurricanes completed a 4-1-1 road trip by whipping the Flyers, 6-3. Jesperi Kotkaniemi had a goal and an assist as Carolina dealt Philadelphia its fifth loss in a row.
— Artemi Panarin broke a 2-2 tie with 8:25 remaining in the Rangers’ 5-2 victory at Boston. Panarin, Ryan Strome and Dryden Hunt each had a goal and an assist in New York’s seventh win in eight games.
— The Wild hammered the Jets, 7-1 as Kirill Kaprizov scored once and tied a career high with three assists. Mats Zuccarello scored twice before leaving with an apparent injury.
— Tage Thompson scored twice and the Sabres stopped a four-game skid by topping the Canadiens, 4-1. Cody Eakin had a goal and an assist as Buffalo sent Montreal to its sixth loss in seven games.
— Tristan Jarry stopped 25 shots as the Penguins handed the Islanders their eighth consecutive regulation loss, 1-0. Kasperi Kapanen scored in the second period to back Jarry’s third shutout of the season and 10th of his career.
— The Maple Leafs knocked off the Sharks, 4-1, as John Tavares and William Nylander each had a goal and assist. Auston Matthews and Wayne Simmonds added goals, and backup goalie Joseph Woll stopped 34 shots as Toronto won for the eighth time in nine games.
— The Blue Jackets doubled up the Canucks, 4-2 as Elvis Merzlikins stopped 39 shots. Gustav Nyquist scored short-handed and had an assist, and Jack Roslovic scored the tiebreaking goal 6:06 into the third period.
— Joe Pavelski reached the 400-goal plateau by scoring twice in the first 91 seconds of the Stars’ 3-1 victory against the Avalanche. Denis Gurianov added a power-play goal as Dallas earned its fifth straight home win.
— Roman Josi and Alexandre Carrier each scored and had an assist to lead the Predators over the Devils, 4-2. Philip Tomasino and Mikael Granlund also scored and Juuse Saros made 23 saves for Nashville.
— The Blackhawks erased a 2-0 deficit and beat the Blues, 3-2 on Alex DeBrincat’s goal 1:27 into overtime. Brandon Hagel scored for the third straight game to tie it with five minutes left in regulation.
— Rickard Rakell had a goal and an assist and the Ducks halted a three-game skid by blanking the Senators, 4-0. Anthony Stolarz handled 34 shots in his fourth career shutout.
