Wisconsin beats Northwestern 35-7, plus Top-25 Round-up

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Braelon Allen rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 20 Wisconsin beat Northwestern 35-7 for its sixth consecutive victory. Graham Mertz threw two touchdown passes, and Wisconsin’s defense recorded four interceptions. Northwestern’s Andrew Marty was picked off three times for a second straight week. Northwestern lost its fourth straight.

Also in Illinois:

— Nic Baker threw a pair of touchdown passes to Avante Cox, Javon Williams Jr. ran in for two more and Southern Illinois defeated Indiana State 47-21. The Salukis — ranked 16th in the FCS coaches poll — remain a game back of first-place North Dakota State in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with one game left in the regular season. SIU is home against Youngstown State next Saturday. Leading 19-7 at halftime, SIU broke the game open with a 21-point third quarter. Baker was 17 of 26 for 233 yards passing. Anthony Thompson was 21 of 33 for 192 yards with two touchdowns and two of the Sycamores’ three interceptions.

In Top-25 Action:

— Georgia’s record remains a perfect 10-0. Stetson Bennett ran for a touchdown and threw for another as the top-ranked Bulldogs wrapped up their Southeastern Conference schedule with a 41-17 rout of Tennessee. Georgia actually trailed by the largest margin it’s seen this season after Tennessee scored a touchdown on the opening drive. The Bulldogs responded by reeling off 27 straight points. Tennessee fell to 5-5.

— Bryce Young passed for 270 yards and five touchdowns, including three to Jameson Williams, and No. 3 Alabama beat New Mexico State 59-3. Young completed 21 of 23 passes in just over a half and the Crimson Tide produced the expected romp after a slow start. Alabama even trailed briefly before rattling off seven touchdowns in 20 minutes for a 49-3 halftime lead over the Aggies.

— Oklahoma is undefeated no more. The No. 4 Sooners fell to No. 18 Baylor, 27-14. Gerry Bohanon threw a touchdown pass and ran for two scores, while Baylor’s defense constantly pressured Caleb Williams and Spencer Rattler as the Bears ended the Sooners’ 17-game winning streak.

— Anthony Brown Jr. threw for 135 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 123 yards and another score, and No. 5 Oregon rallied in the second half to beat Washington State 38-24. Washington State tied the game at 14 before halftime but Oregon pulled away in the third quarter. The Ducks have now won five straight.

— C.J. Stroud threw for 361 yards and five touchdowns, freshman TreVeyon Henderson rumbled for two more scores as No. 6 Ohio State struck early and rolled over Purdue 59-31. The Buckeyes (9-1, 7-0 Big Ten, CFP No. 4) scored on all seven of their first-half possessions, piling up 45 points. Purdue hadn’t allowed more than 30 in any game this year.

— Jack Coan threw three touchdown passes to lead No. 7 Notre Dame 28-3 victory against Virginia. Coan connected with Michael Mayer from 6 yards, Braden Lenzy from 4 yards, and Kevin Austin from 15 yards. Virginia played without quarterback Brennan Armstrong, who leads the nation in total offense but sustained a rib injury in a loss to BYU two weeks ago.

— No. 8 Michigan State bounce back from its first loss with a 40-21 victory over Maryland. Payton Thorne threw two of his four touchdown passes to Jayden Reed, and Kenneth Walker ran for 143 yards and two scores, keeping the Spartans (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 7 CFP) in the Big Ten championship race.

— No. 9 Michigan remains in the race for the Big Ten championship after a 21-17 victory over Penn State. Cade McNamara threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to tight end Erick All with 3:29 left. McNamara threw three touchdowns in all, two to Roman Wilson, to boost Michigan to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference.

— No. 10 Oklahoma State rolled past TCU 63-17, as Jaylen Warren ran for three touchdowns. The Cowboys move into a tie with Oklahoma for first place in the Big 12 conference, after the Sooners’ loss to Baylor.

— A.J. Finley returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown and Matt Corral threw for 247 yards and a touchdown to lead No. 12 Mississippi to a 29-19 win over No. 11 Texas A&M. After trailing 15-0 at the half, Texas A&M whittled the lead to 15-13 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

— Sam Hartman accounted for four touchdowns while Justice Ellison ran for his second fourth-quarter score with 1:47 left. That helped No. 13 Wake Forest beat No. 21 North Carolina State 45-42.

— It took a couple late defensive stands to avoid an upset, but No. 15 UTSA held on to beat Southern Mississippi, 27-17, and remain undefeated. Frank Harris passed for 227 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 54 yards.

— No. 16 Auburn was beaten, 43-34, by Mississippi State. Auburn scored touchdowns on its first four possessions to build a led 28-3 first half lead, but Mississippi State’s Will Rogers threw for 415 yards and six touchdowns, scoring 40 unanswered points,

— No. 17 Houston methodically dispatched Temple 37-8 to clinch a berth in the American Athletic Conference championship game. Alton McCaskill rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

— No. 19 Iowa withstood three fourth-quarter comeback attempts to beat Minnesota,27-22. Alex Padilla threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in his first career start for the Hawkeyes.

— Nose tackle Thomas Gore stopped Shermari Jones’ run for a two-point conversion with 1:09 to play and Georgia State held on to defeat No. 22 Coastal Carolina 42-40.

— No. 24 Louisiana-Lafayette beat Troy 35-21, as Levi Lewis threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score.
