The Centralia City Council Monday night created a new Class H liquor license strictly for cosmetic service establishments.
Mayor Bryan Kuder says he investigated the new type of license at the request of Hollywood Hair who had been turned down on the idea by the past administration.
“A lot of them were in the Metro East area. I looked at how they did business, what their income was and what they were selling. What they were selling is an atmosphere really. They actually have party busses that go to this establishment, they get their hair done and they have drinks. And it’s actually a big business. Then I went back to the salon and talked to their managers and owners.”
Kuder says city staff then sat down to determine what type of restrictions need to be included. The final list includes at least 51-percent of business has to be from gross retail sales of cosmetic services. No signage is allowed about alcoholic sales.
The ordinance allows consumption of beer, wine and other liquor by the glass. Kuder says it will NOT allow for video gaming.
The council closed some downtown streets and sidewalks for the Christmas Stroll on December third.
Two long time city employees were recognized as they retire. They are Public Property Foreman Patrick Stedelin who worked for the city for 36 years and Police Sergeant James T. Ramsey who was on the police force for 25 years.
City Manager Scott Randall says public works crews could not complete pickup for the fall city wide pickup by the end of the day on Friday. He expects the pickups to be finished by the end of the work day on Tuesday.
