A 72-year-old Mt. Vernon man was injured late Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on the Route 161 Extension near Klomp Road near the start of the Skillet Fork Bridge repair project.
Initial reports from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department indicates Lindell Lowery of South 42nd Street was suffering from a medical issue when he was westbound on the Route 161 Extension, entered the eastbound lane, left the south side of the road, struck the mobile stop light assembly to direct the one-way traffic across the bridge, hit two traffic barrels and came to a stop after hitting a stop sign.
Lowery’s vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage. He was transported to a Mt. Vernon hospital for treatment after Air Evac declined to fly due to weather conditions.
The crash occurred at 4:31 Saturday afternoon.
