The Centralia High School Showcase on Stage is performing its fall production, James and the Giant Peach, this week at the Band Shell at the Centralia Public Library.

This will be the first time the Showcase performs one of its two yearly shows at an outdoor venue. The change was motivated by COVID concerns, which have also affected rehearsals and other aspects of the production. Director Jami Jacobs said that although adapting to the situation has been a challenge, it’s one that the cast and crew have handled well:

“We’ve had to deal with quarantines and sickness, and can we have practice, can we not have practice? But overall, it’s been more normal than it has been in a really long time… I’ve always wanted to do an outdoor show, so this was a good opportunity. There have been some challenges with the set design and the equipment, but it’s been a really cool experience.”

Senior Amanda Taylor, who plays the role of Aunt Spiker, also felt that there was a benefit to an outdoor performance.

“It’s been a lot different, how we do the show and our practices. I’m glad we got the opportunity to be outside this year so we can spread out and not wear masks while we’re performing.”

Junior Tyjon Matthews, who plays Grasshopper, said that the play has been a unique and rewarding experience.

“(There’s been) a very fun cast of people. Very new. I’ve never done a show like this before, so it’s very rewarding, and just a good time.”

Performances of James and the Giant Peach will take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, October 21-23, starting at 7 PM. Admission is five dollars, and concessions will be available.
