UNDATED (AP) — No. 1 Georgia is making a case that defense still does win championships, but this isn’t a trend outside of Athens. Across the country, offenses are still humming along at a pace similar to recent seasons. The Bulldogs are an outlier in many ways during a a first half of the season filled wit upsets and unpredictability. Through seven weeks, 47 ranked teams have lost and more than half of those have been to unranked teams, including a historic loss by Alabama to Texas A&M.
UNDATED (AP) — The Associated Press midseason All-America team is led by Alabama quarterback Bryce Young and Texas running back Bijan Robinson. No. 1 Georgia’s ferocious defense is represented by defensive tackle Jordan Davis and linebacker Nakobe Dean. The team was picked by voters in The Associated Press Top 25 poll.
UNDATED (AP) — South Carolina is ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason women’s basketball poll for the second consecutive season. UConn is No. 2. Defending national champion Stanford was third. Maryland and North Carolina State round out the top five. Two Big Ten teams have their best preseason ranking ever: Indiana is No. 8 and Michigan is No. 11. There is excitement in Iowa, too: Iowa is ranked ninth and Iowa State is 12th.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State senior guard Myles Dread is one of a few familiar faces back for an older team looking to rebound from a tumultuous 2020. So far, the team’s experiences with new head coach Micah Shrewsberry and a handful of veteran transfers hungry to win on big stages have them eager to start.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Receiver Jeshaun Jones and linebacker Durell Nchami are both expected to miss the rest of the season for Maryland. Coach Michael Locksley said Jones had a lower-leg injury that requires surgery, and he said Nchami had upper-body surgery. The Terrapins won their first four games this season. Then their much-anticipated matchups with Iowa and Ohio State went about as badly as possible. Maryland lost standout receiver Dontay Demus to a season-ending injury in the Iowa game, then Jones went down against Ohio State. The Terps also lost both games by a combined score of 117-31.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Maryland receiver Jeshaun Jones is expected to miss the rest of the season because of a leg injury. Coach Michael Locksley announced that Tuesday. It’s another blow to the Terrapins’ offense, which already lost receiver Dontay Demus to a season-ending injury. Locksley said Jones’ injury from an Oct. 9 loss to Ohio State will require surgery. Locksley also said linebacker Durell Nchami had season-ending upper-body surgery. The Terrapins are coming off their open date. They play at Minnesota on Saturday.
