Two Republican candidates for Governor were among the guest speakers at this weekend’s Reagan Day Dinner hosted by the Marion County Republican Women at the Salem Elks.

Southern Illinois Senators Darren Bailey and Paul Schimpf are both hoping to unseat Governor JB Pritzker in next year’s election.

Bailey promised the several hundred in attendance he has a backbone to stick his neck out and is not afraid to say what needs to be done.

“Friends, today the two-party system allows that one of the parties is here to destroy us and we have got to stop it.  I’m telling you Proverbs 28:2 tells us when there is moral wrought in a nation, it’s government topples easily.  Wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability.  Friends, it’s time for us to turn back to God and turn back to the root as to why we exist as a nation.”

Bailey says the Republican Party has the answers and solutions in its platform to return to moral integrity.

Schimpf called Pritzker a catastrophic failure who is responsible for efforts not to inform parents when their underage daughter is seeking an abortion, allowing those illegally in the country to be released back into local communities after serving time for crimes and for the high gas tax.

“I have a voting record.  I have voted pro-life, pro-second amendment, and I have voted against every single tax increase that has come across my desk, even those that Republican leaders in the General Assembly is in favor of.  So you know exactly where I stand and that is one reason you should consider supporting me.”

Schimpf said if elected he will work to get parental rights back, make communities safer, and work do away with predatory taxes like the two taxes that have resulted in the high gas tax.

A third Republican Gubernatorial candidate, Gary Rabine, had a spokesperson present.

A number of other candidates and officeholders also spoke at the dinner.

We’ll be hearing from them as the week goes on.
